BevelBoard - red oak

$165.00

These handmade, solid wood BevelBoards are my version of a classic charcuterie or serving board - but with a modern twist. The steep bevels are cut on all four edges on the top and bottom sides, creating striking visual interest. Special equipment is used to achieve these acute angles and hand sanding with progressively finer grits creates a smooth surface.

On the underside four support legs, also made from red oak, are fitted into matching square mortises to create strong connections. Felt pads are added to prevent scratching of tables and countertops.

Red oak is light to medium colored wood and is one of the most abundant domestic hardwoods. In my opinion it is a bit underrated and when finished with only a clear coat it can actually be quite attractive, in an understated kind of way. Its surface is quite hard and the grain and open pores display a lot of character in the finished piece. Compared to white oak it tends to be more of a golden-brown color, with hints of red. Every red oak BevelBoard will be distinctly different, and no two are ever the same.

The board has been left in its natural color (no stain added) and it is finished with mixture of pure tung oil and citrus oil. Tung oil is made from the seeds of the Tung Tree; it is a natural and renewable resource and compared to mineral oil it actually hardens over the course of a few days. The resulting finish protects the wood from moisture and stains while being flexible enough to allow for slight wood movement with the seasons.

We include a 1oz. tin of Bumblechutes “All-in-One Wood Conditioner Wax” with each BevelBoard so when the time comes you can rejuvenate the surface quickly and easily at home. The conditioner is of course food-safe and can be used on all wooden cutting boards, butcher blocks, wooden utensils, etc.

BevelBoards are the perfect gift for the cheese and charcuterie lover in your life. They also make great closing gifts for realtors, as well as housewarming, birthday, anniversary and retirement gifts. Really any occasion when you want to surprise a special person with a special, one-of-a-kind artisan made gift. And if you like to entertain larger crowds make sure to get multiple BevelBoards in different wood species!

BevelBoard dimensions: 15” x 9 1/2”, board thickness 7/8” - overall height with legs approx. 1 3/8”

(Cheeses, crackers, etc. are props only and not included with purchase, sorry.)

Intended Use:

BevelBoards are intended to be used as serving or display boards. While you can cut food on the board you will create knife marks in the wood surface. If you’d like to avoid knife marks you could pre-cut cheese and meats into individual portions on a separate cutting board before placing them on the BevelBoard for serving.

Care and Maintenance:

Your BevelBoard has been finished with multiple coats of Tung Oil and a coat of Wood Conditioner Wax for a resilient, water-repellent finish. To clean, simply wipe with a damp cloth. To remove grease or other spots (mustard, ketchup, etc.) use a drop of dish soap and wipe with a moist cloth. Wipe dry both sides with a towel and allow to air-dry on counter before placing in a cabinet. Never put a BevelBoard (or any wooden cutting board) in the dishwasher or submerge in water. Do not leave wooden boards outside overnight as the higher humidity at night could permeate the wood and cause the boards to swell or buckle. To refinish the surface wipe clean and dry, then apply thin coat of Wood Conditioner and buff with a clean towel.

An important note regarding the natural variations of real wood:

All BevelBoards are individual pieces made from real hardwood and as such will vary in color and grain picture. No two are perfectly identical, each is unique. The BevelBoard you receive will be the species and finish you order but it will look slightly different from the sample images shown here.

I also make BevelBoards in other wood species including white and red oak, cherry, walnut, maple and possibly other species in the future.
