SlopedBoard-white oak carving board
These handmade, white oak SlopedBoards are perfect for carving roasts and serving larger cuts of meat, steaks and poultry. And they offer a different approach to keeping juices from messing up the dining table. Instead of a traditional juice groove around the perimeter, I’ve designed these boards with a built-in incline or ramp. Not only can this slope hold more liquid than a 1/4” deep groove, it is also much easier to pour out the juices once the roast has been carved. The unique design of the SlopedBoard is sure to get some attention at your next party! A modern yet artisan look, not found with mass produced cutting boards.
Made from white oak, the angled ramp section is machined into a solid 1.5” thick board (it might have been easier to add the perimeter “berm” to a flat board but that’s not how I do things.) To keep the board flat for years to come two cross-legs are fitted tightly into dovetailed grooves on the bottom. This allows the board to expand and contract in width will keeping the surface flat.
In our domestic hardwoods, white oak ranks among the top for strength, grain pattern and its timeless good looks. It has a natural beautiful blonde color and is easily recognized in any setting, home or business. As can be seen in the images, white oak has slight color differences from tree to tree, and sometimes from board to board, with the overall color being a light brown to blonde shade.
When making my white oak SlopedBoards I use the golden heartwood but an occasional streak or lighter or darker section lends an interesting focal point to these handmade carving boards. Having a variety of colors, grains and textures in one finished piece shows the natural variations of the tree the board was made from.
Every white oak SlopedBoard will be distinctly different, and no two are ever the same.
The board has been left in its natural color (no stain added) and it is finished with mixture of pure tung oil and citrus oil. Tung oil is made from the seeds of the Tung Tree; it is a natural and renewable resource and compared to mineral oil it actually hardens over the course of a few days. The resulting finish protects the wood from moisture and stains while being flexible enough to allow for slight wood movement with the seasons.
We include a 1oz. tin of Bumblechutes “All-in-One Wood Conditioner Wax” with each SlopedBoard so when the time comes you can rejuvenate the surface quickly and easily at home. The conditioner is of course food-safe and can be used on all wooden cutting boards, butcher blocks, wooden utensils, etc.
SlopedBoards are the perfect gift for the grill and BBQ fan and for the serious hobby cook in your life. They also make great closing gifts for realtors, as well as housewarming, birthday, anniversary and retirement gifts. Really any occasion when you want to surprise a special person with a special, one-of-a-kind artisan made gift.
SlopedBoard dimensions: 19” x 14” overall, and 2 1/2’” tall with legs. The sloped section is approx. 15” x 11” and the top board is 1.5” thick. This is a substantial board, weighing about 12 lbs.!
(Steaks are props only and not included with purchase, sorry.)

Intended Use:
SlopedBoards are intended to be used as carving and serving boards. Cutting on the board will of course create knife marks which add to the board’s character over time. To refresh the surface make sure the board is clean and dry, then sand with 150 and then 220 grit sandpaper to remove as many knife marks as possible. Re-treat the bare wood with tung oil first, then add the included wax conditioner for ongoing maintenance.
Care and Maintenance:
Your SlopedBoard has been finished with multiple coats of Tung Oil and a coat of Wood Conditioner Wax for a resilient, water-repellent finish. To clean, simply wipe with a damp cloth. To remove grease or other spots (mustard, ketchup, etc.) use a drop of dish soap, rinse with warm water and wipe dry both sides with a towel. Be sure to allow to air-dry on counter before placing in a cabinet. Never put a SlopedBoard (or any wooden cutting board) in the dishwasher or submerge in water. Do not leave wooden boards outside overnight as the higher humidity at night could permeate the wood and cause the boards to swell or buckle. Do not leave meat juices or blood pooled on the board overnight. To refinish the surface wipe clean and dry, then apply thin coat of Wood Conditioner and buff with a clean towel.
An important note regarding the natural variations of real wood:
All SlopedBoards are individual pieces made from real hardwood and as such will vary in color and grain picture. No two are perfectly identical, each is unique. The board you receive will be the species and finish you order but it will look slightly different from the sample images shown here.
